  • What is solvent extraction?
  • Solvent extraction is now used universally either as a ‘finishing’ unit operation after low-pressure expellers, or as the sole process for extraction of oil, for most oilseeds. The present-day world scenario in vegetable oil extraction is dominated by solvent extraction.
  • How is vegetable oil made?
  • Vegetable oil is made by extracting oil from plant seeds or fruits and then refining it to remove impurities. Plant seed vegetable oil goes through a particularly meticulous process due to the difficulty of extracting oil from seeds and the additional refinement needed. Let's begin with everyone's favorite: definitions!
  • When was solvent extraction first used?
  • In United States, solvent extraction was adopted on a major scale during the decade preceding World War II to extract oil from soybeans primarily. The first use of a batch solvent extractor was reported in 1855 in France, where carbon disulfide was employed to extract oil from spent presscakes of olive (Kemper, 2005).
  • What solvent is used to extract vegetable oil?
  • When the solvent is added to the pressed "oil cake," it dissolves and extracts the oil. Interestingly, the solvent that is most commonly used to extract vegetable oil is hexane, which itself is a product of crude oil, or petroleum. Hexane is also used as a base in paint thinners and as a cleaning agent in furniture manufacturing.
  • How much oil can be extracted from a cake?
  • Solvent extraction, developed since the 1920s, offers an alternative to enable extraction of up to 98% of the oil, leaving only 0.5–1.5% oil in deoiled cake (known as the ‘meal’).
  • How is copra oil extracted?
  • Copra, with very high oil content, up to 67%, is mostly pressed in two stages to recover most of the oil, leaving only 7–8% oil-in-cake; the cake is either solvent-extracted, or used directly for animal feed. Oil-bearing materials with oil content lower than 25%, such as soybean and rice bran, are subjected to direct solvent extraction.
