By 1914 Buckeye operated eleven large cottonseed oil mills in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas. One of its Memphis plants, constructed in 1911, was described as “a monster cotton oil mill.”

In 1977 a group of ginners purchased a cottonseed oil crushing facility located at 1021 East Fifth Street in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. This plant was organized as a cooperative under the name of Planters Cotton Oil Mill, Inc.
Eventually, the accumulation of cotton seeds in the American South led to innovation and the development of an extremely profitable cottonseed crushing industry. Initially, animal- or water-powered pestles crushed the cotton seeds until oil was extracted, but the process was made easier by the use of oil mills in the early 19th century.
